JANESVILLE/ BOCA RATON, FL---William Joseph Ryan, age 87, of Janesville and Boca Raton, FL, died Saturday, September 17, 2011, at his home. He was born in Janesville on Aug. 1, 1924, the son of William H. and Myrtle M. (Westrick) Ryan. A 1942 graduate of Janesville High School, he spent 3 ½ years in the Army during WWII and subsequently graduated from the Civil Engineering program at the University of Wisconsin in 1949. He married Joan Johnson on Dec. 29, 1951, and was blessed with 2 sons and 2 daughters. He was President of the Ryan family heavy construction company firm as it grew from a State to a National contractor. At the time of his death he was Chairman of the Ryan companies, based in Deerfield Beach, FL. He served on a number of community and business boards. Between the Janesville Board of Education and the Board of Mercy Hospital he spent 43 years in public service for the Janesville Community. He was active in a number of Chief Executive groups and managed many seminars and served in many leadership capacities. Along with his love for jazz music, he was deeply involved in the art of photography. Among his exhibitions are two permanent exhibits. At the Hedberg Public Library is a display titled "The Town I Love" and at the Department of Irish Studies at Georgia Southern University an exhibit depicting Ireland. He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Janesville, and Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Boca Raton, FL.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Ryan; 3 children: Shirley (Edward) Arendt of Chicago, William (Judy) Ryan of Parkland, FL, Tina (Joe) Pregont of Janesville; daughter-in-law, Amy Ryan of Masontown, PA; grandchildren: Kelly (Brien) Meyer, Becky (Brandon) Hecht, Jennifer Wright, Patrick Ryan, Katie Wright, Rachel Pregont, JoJo Pregont, Caitlin Ryan, Emily Ryan, Michael Pregont, Kim Ryan, Caroline Ryan, and Ricky Ryan; 2 great grandchildren, Ryan Hecht and Caleb Meyer; a brother, Donald (Diana) Ryan of Janesville; and a sister-in-law, Sue Ryan of Janesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard Ryan; and brother, Thomas Ryan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH with Fr. Randy Timmerman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and again on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at church. Memorials may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or HospiceCare Inc.
